Deerfield, Ill., June 15, 2010—Pregis Hexacomb® has received the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) Chain of Custody certification for products produced at its Ermelo, Netherlands production facility. The company is one of the first honeycomb producers to receive FSC certification (No. SCS-COC-003200).
There are two parts to the FSC system. The Forest Management certification ensures that the forest is managed to high standards covering social, environmental and economic issues. The Chain of Custody certification traces the wood from those forests through all stages of processing and distribution.
Hexacomb is made from 100% paper (all natural, renewable virgin and post consumer recycled fibers) and engineered into a proprietary honeycomb configuration. The product offers excellent strength, superior cushioning and blocking/bracing functions for a wide range of protective packaging and other applications. Hexacomb® products include sheets, runners, edge and corner protectors.
Hexacomb products that are made from an FSC certified process are being rolled out to the following markets/applications: consumer and industrial products; graphics and point-of-purchase; office and residential furniture; distribution and fabrication; building products; protective packaging; appliances, and glass.
“The FSC process is considered the most stringent certification for forestry products in Europe. Providing Hexacomb customers with products that meet the tough FSC criteria is just one way our products help brand owners achieve their environmental objectives,” said Carel Daams, plant manager at Hexacomb’s Ermelo facility.
The Ermelo facility is one of three Hexacomb plants located in Europe. (The other two are located in Amboise, France and Aoiz, Spain.) It services customers within a 1,000 km (620 mile) radius of its 10,000 sq. meter (107,000 sq. foot) plant. This impacts customers in the UK, Spain, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
“We’ve partnered with an FSC-certified paper supplier which enables us to manufacture products to this more stringent standard. It is our goal to partner with additional FSC-certified suppliers so that we can convert more plants and product lines,” Daams said.
